Presented by Jacqueline Jacobs, M.A., this event is in-person and free to providers for two (2) CE credits. Lunch will be provided.
Substance misuse is a common coping strategy for people who are struggling with mental health conditions. Nationwide and in Colorado, suicide and accidental overdose are leading causes of mortality. However, many mental health professionals feel uncomfortable and ill-equipped in knowing how to support a client who is struggling with substance use. Lack of screening, intervention and referral to appropriate treatment has enormous consequences for our communities. Together, we can ensure that every mental health and allied health professional in Colorado is equipped with the data, knowledge and skill-set to recognize and effectively respond to substance use concerns.
This training aims to begin bridging the knowledge gap by bolstering provider knowledge base. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of substance use disorders, including relevant epidemiological considerations and prevalence rates within the state of Colorado. Further, participants will be introduced to various theoretical conceptualizations of substance use disorders. There will be an in-depth exploration and discussion of substance use as an attachment and regulatory disorder. Finally, there will be a discussion of relevant considerations related to policy, screening, referral, and treatment, offering participants tools and resources to use within their work.
Learning Objectives / Workshop Participants will:
Describe foundational information related to substance use disorders, including prevalence, etiology, diagnostic considerations, and treatment implications.
Discuss and describe various theoretical orientations of substance use disorders.
Explain the relationship between attachment, our regulatory system, and substance use disorders.
Describe the importance of relationships within recovery.
